亞莉莎·佛里克是庫克縣州檢察官（State's attorney）彼得·佛里克的妻子，結婚後一直相夫教子，但十多年後某天彼得卻爆出召妓不忠醜聞，更因涉及貪污而被捕入獄判刑十年。亞莉莎為了自己與孩子的生計，不得不找上老朋友威爾·嘉納，在他擔任合夥律師的「史登、洛克哈與嘉納」（Stern, Lockhart & Gardner）律師事務所，成為一名初級訴訟律師，更被迫與一起入職的年輕律師凱利·亞戈斯爭取職位。
